Property Details

The Old Rechabite Hall, Winterslow, Wiltshire now sold

Historical Note:- The property is a detached former Rechabite Hall which has brick elevations beneath a slate roof. It is thought to have been constructed in 1911 when many Friendly Societies existed and served a real need for sickness, death benefits and sometimes mortgages. There was already an Oddfellows Society in the village but the Rechabites pledged to abstain from alcohol and this set them apart from any other groups. At this time the village, which had a total population of less than 100, had five public houses and two friendly halls.

The Hall was used for cookery lessons for the girls from the village school and during the 1914-1918 war the hall hosted tea parties for American soldiers who were billeted locally and entertained by the villagers. Gradually through the years with changing social habits and the advent of Social Security the Rechabite use disappeared and although the Girl Guides met there for many years it was mainly used by the local doctor as a surgery between 1946 and 1976. It was purchased in 1978 by Mr Jones who was an inventor and who carried out a number of repairs to it and used it for the production of meterological instruments.

The Conversion:- The property has recently been converted to an unparalleled standard and the work has been undertaken with a critical eye to historical detail and with the use of superior quality materials and fittings. As a consequence a striking conversion has been achieved which incorporates the numerous attractions of an older building with the advantages of a contemporary interior of the highest quality. It would therefore suit purchasers who are looking for individuality and a modern lifestyle. Attention to detail is evident everywhere with oak being used for the internal doors, flooring, window cills and staircase. The property has a combination of uPVC and secondary double glazing and is wired for Broadband and cinematic surround sound in addition to intruder and smoke alarms. There are also numerous telephone, FM, television and satellite points in addition to computer modem points. There are also numerous smoke sensors and halogen lighting. The property has an oil fired central heating system.
